The Jardim do Cerco is an illuminated structure, maintained with attention to detail for the benefit of the local population and visitors. Water ponds, wide paths, shady trees and a century-old water wheel that still works, are some of the attractions of this garden inspired by Versailles.
This place is the perfect transition between the walled expanse of Tapada Real and the monuments of the National Palace of Mafra, which stands at one of its edges.
The forest and the gardens extend over eight hectares, offering nooks, shades, waterfalls and even a peculiar garden: the Horta dos Frades (Garden of the Friars), where it is possible to observe the plants used in medicinal products (pharmacy), at the time of its construction, which was ordered by King João V.
