Archives and Museum of Misericórdia of Ericeira

The Archives and Museum of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia of Ericeira, which also includes the Misericórdia church, is set up in the former offices of the Irmandade (religious association) of Nossa Senhora do Rosário (Our Lady of the Rosary), formerly the hostel and hospital next to the church.

Arquivo-Museu da Misericórdia da Ericeira

Founded on 1 June 1937, it currently serves as Ericeira’s main museum centre, safeguarding a valuable collection of the town’s heritage. Its artefacts include the nine 17th-century paintings depicting the cycle of the Passion of the Christ, which would be taken out into Ericeira’s streets during the Procissão dos Fogaréus, a procession conducted every Good Friday.

The collection also includes an ivory and wood sculpture of Nossa Senhora em Majestade (Our Lady in Majesty), also from the 17th century, Indo-Portuguese in origin; and a collection of engravings, including Spanish works from the second half of the 18th century, representing the Obras de Misericórdia Corporais (Corporal Works of Mercy); and the charter granted by King Manuel to this town in 1513.

The Archives and Museum is also home to an important collection of ethnographic accounts recounting the local community’s relationship with the sea, which has always contributed to the construction of its identity.
